Dryer Fabric Maintenance: A Condition-Based Guide

Maintain the fabric from its own baseline

Dryer-fabric life depends on position, temperature, contamination, tension, alignment, seam condition and cleaning practice. Maintenance can reduce avoidable damage, but it does not guarantee a fixed extension for every machine.

Build an inspection record

At a frequency defined by the mill's risk and operating plan, record:

  • Edge fraying, curling, cracking or contact with stationary parts
  • Seam wear, pin condition and any local distortion
  • Deposits, blocked areas and uneven permeability symptoms
  • Fabric tracking, guiding response and roll condition
  • Running tension compared with the approved installation baseline

Photograph the same positions and record the dryer group, grade and fabric running time so that changes can be trended.

Clean according to the deposit and fabric material

Identify whether the deposit is fiber, filler, pitch, stickies or another contaminant before choosing water, mechanical or chemical cleaning. Cleaning chemistry, concentration, temperature, pressure, nozzle distance and exposure time must follow the fabric supplier, equipment supplier and mill safety procedure. A universal pressure or distance can damage seams or yarns.

Investigate the cause before adjusting

Edge wear may originate from alignment, guiding, rolls, stretchers or contact points. Deposits may reflect furnish, ventilation, pocket conditions or ineffective showers. Record one corrective action at a time and compare condition, sheet moisture, steam per ton and downtime with the baseline.
