Forming Fabric FAQs

Forming Fabric FAQs

Selection, drainage, wear and sheet quality.

What is the difference between single, double, and triple layer forming fabric?

The layers describe the weave construction, not a guaranteed ranking of drainage or life. More complex structures can separate the sheet-contact surface from the wear side. Compare actual permeability, fiber support, caliper and wear data for the same machine position.

What mesh count should I choose for my forming fabric?

Mesh count alone cannot determine the right fabric. Share the grade, basis-weight range, furnish, speed, current fabric specification and drainage or sheet-quality problem; the weave and yarn geometry also matter.

What is Fiber Support Index (FSI) and why does it matter?

FSI is a calculated indicator of the sheet-side support geometry. It helps compare forming surfaces, but does not by itself predict retention, drainage or defects. Request the calculation method and compare it with permeability, drainage index and mill observations.

How do I know when to replace my forming fabric?

Compare current sheet quality, drainage, wear, damage and production records with your own start-up baseline. A sudden change first calls for a machine and process check; agree replacement criteria with the mill team using its historical data.

What causes wire marking on my paper sheet?

Possible sources include fabric surface geometry, tension, drainage elements, vacuum and furnish. Record where the mark appears and whether its repeat pattern matches the fabric or a machine element before changing the weave.

SSB vs standard triple layer — is the price difference worth it?

Compare quotations against the same width, length, yarn specification and delivery terms. A decision needs mill-specific evidence on sheet quality, drainage, run length and total operating cost; no improvement or payback is guaranteed by the construction name.

What forming fabric material — PET or PA?

Material choice depends on wear location, chemistry, temperature and dimensional requirements. A design may combine yarn materials, but the actual composition and suitability must be confirmed for the proposed model and machine conditions.

What CFM do I need?

There is no universal CFM for a paper grade. Compare the existing fabric measurement with drainage, vacuum, speed, basis weight and formation data; specify the test standard and units when comparing suppliers.

How does recycled fiber affect fabric life?

Recycled furnish may introduce abrasive fillers or contaminants, but the effect varies by stock preparation and cleaning. Compare wear position, furnish and shower records with the previous run before attributing shorter life to recycled fiber.

Can PAPTEX produce fabrics for any machine brand?

We assess fit by the machine position and required dimensions, seam, construction and operating conditions, not the brand name alone. Send the current fabric specification or drawing so feasibility can be confirmed before quotation.

Press Felt FAQs

Press Felt FAQs

Selection, dewatering and conditioning.

BOM vs laminated vs needle felt — what's the difference?

These labels describe construction, but are not interchangeable specifications. Compare base structure, batt, weight, permeability and compression behavior for the specific nip; ask for a model-level data sheet.

How often should press felts be replaced?

There is no fixed replacement interval across machines. Track dryness, water removal, permeability, contamination, wear and breaks against your own start-up baseline; replace after diagnosing whether the felt or another process change caused the decline.

Why is my press felt filling up quickly?

Inspect shower nozzles and filtration, vacuum elements, chemical deposits, furnish carryover and the felt structure. Record permeability and moisture trends before adjusting cleaning chemistry or ordering a different felt.

What felt weight (g/m²) do I need?

Weight alone does not define water handling or durability. Specify the press position, nip type, speed, grade, current felt construction and measured dewatering; the proposed weight must be reviewed with the full structure.

Can the same felt design be used for every press position?

Different positions can have different water loads, nip conditions and sheet-side requirements. Review each position separately; reuse a design only after its measurements and operating record support it.

What causes press felt edge wear?

Check edge contact, roll alignment, guiding, tension profile and suction-box edges. Photograph both edges and note whether the wear is localized or continuous before changing felt construction.

How important is press felt conditioning?

Showers and vacuum equipment help keep the felt open and remove water, but settings must follow the machine and felt supplier instructions. Trend dryness and permeability, and inspect nozzles and suction elements before increasing pressure.

Is a BOM press felt worth the price difference?

Assess the candidate against the current felt using the same nip conditions, water-removal data, run length and purchase terms. Construction alone does not establish a performance gain or payback.

Dryer Fabric FAQs

Dryer Fabric FAQs

Construction, permeability, seams and running.

Flat yarn or spiral dryer fabric?

Compare the machine position, required permeability, contact, seam, running stability and installation route. Neither construction is inherently best for every grade; use model-level measurements and current operating records.

What dryer fabric CFM should I specify?

Specify the test method and units, then compare the current fabric with pocket ventilation, moisture profile, speed and drying constraints. The appropriate value depends on position and machine conditions, not grade alone.

Which dryer fabric seam type should I choose?

The seam must suit the fabric structure, installation method, machine dimensions and operating temperature. Confirm seam construction and closing procedure on the proposed model rather than assuming one seam is strongest in every position.

How can I prevent dryer fabric guiding problems?

Check roll alignment, guide response, tension, seam squareness and whether drift changes with temperature. Record the direction and timing of movement before adjusting the guide or ordering a new fabric.

What temperature can dryer fabrics withstand?

Temperature limits depend on the actual yarn, seam and exposure time. Request the proposed model’s documented operating limits and compare them with measured machine temperatures; do not use a generic polymer limit as a product rating.

Do I need an anti-static dryer fabric?

Consider it if static, dust attraction or sheet-release issues have been observed. Confirm the proposed model’s anti-static construction and operating suitability; first check humidity, grounding and machine conditions.

How long do dryer fabrics last?

Service life varies with heat, contamination, seam wear, guiding and cleaning. Compare days and production volume with your own previous runs, and document the failure mode before choosing a replacement design.

Can PAPTEX supply a dryer fabric for any configuration?

Feasibility depends on dimensions, run path, seam, permeability, temperature and installation constraints. Share the current drawing or specification so the required configuration can be checked before an offer.

Procurement FAQs

Procurement FAQs

Information needed for a quotation and order.

What is PAPTEX delivery time?

Delivery depends on the model, dimensions, order quantity, production schedule and destination. Request a written lead time for the exact quotation; do not plan a shutdown from a general website estimate.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the machine position, fabric type, width and length, current model or drawing, speed, grade, operating conditions, quantity and destination. Add photos or operating data if the request concerns a recurring problem.

Does PAPTEX offer samples?

Ask which material or construction sample you need and what decision it should support. Availability, size, cost and shipping must be confirmed for the specific request.

What quality certifications are available?

Request the current certificate file and verify its holder, issuer, scope and validity dates. A management-system certificate is not a performance certification for every individual fabric model.

How does PAPTEX pricing compare?

Compare like-for-like dimensions, construction, seam, delivery, payment terms and documented service. A lower unit price does not prove lower operating cost; use your own run and downtime records where available.

Does PAPTEX offer after-sales support?

Describe the issue and share the model, installation date, photos and operating data through the contact form. Support scope, channel and timing should be agreed in the quotation or order rather than assumed from this FAQ.

What are the payment and shipping terms?

They depend on the order and destination. Confirm the Incoterm, payment milestones, currency, packing, insurance and documents in the written quotation before placing an order.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

The feasible quantity depends on the product and dimensions. Send the required specification and quantity for confirmation; no site-wide minimum is stated here.

Installation & Maintenance FAQs

Installation & Maintenance FAQs

Handling, storage and machine-specific settings.

How long does forming fabric installation take?

Time depends on the machine layout, access, fabric size, seam and crew preparation. Plan with the mill’s installation procedure and the specific product instructions, including inspection before start-up.

What is the most common installation mistake?

Avoid forcing a fabric past sharp edges or applying uneven tension. Verify direction, dimensions, seam alignment, machine clearance and handling instructions before starting the run.

How should fabrics be stored?

Keep the original packaging and support intact, in a clean, dry area protected from direct sunlight, heat, chemicals and crushing. Follow any model-specific storage instructions and inspect the packaging before installation.

How often should cleaning showers be inspected?

Set a site-specific inspection schedule based on water quality, nozzle condition and fabric performance. Check for blocked or misdirected nozzles and record changes in coverage before adjusting pressure.

What chemical cleaning is recommended?

Use the machine and fabric supplier’s approved procedure after identifying the deposit. Confirm chemical compatibility, concentration, temperature, dwell time and rinsing; do not apply a generic recipe to an unknown fabric.

Can I rotate or flip a forming fabric?

Do not rotate or flip it without confirming the specified running direction, sheet side, wear side and seam design. Changing orientation can affect contact and tracking; consult the model instructions.

What is the correct fabric tension?

Use the range stated for the actual fabric and machine position, then verify the machine’s tension measurement and profile. A universal number across forming, press and dryer positions would be unsafe.

How should a fabric be handled during installation?

Use clean lifting equipment and enough support to avoid folds, cuts and local stretching. Protect the seam and edges, follow the marked direction, and stop if the fabric catches on a machine component.

Troubleshooting FAQs

Troubleshooting FAQs

How to gather evidence before changing a fabric or setting.

Fabric life suddenly fell — what should I check?

Compare the failed fabric with previous runs: wear location, installation record, furnish, showers, vacuum, temperature, alignment and recent machine changes. Preserve photos and a sample; do not assume the new fabric is the only changed variable.

What causes moisture streaks after the dryer section?

Map the streak across the sheet and compare it with press moisture, fabric contamination, pocket ventilation, seam location and condensate removal. A repeat pattern helps narrow the source but is not a diagnosis by itself.

Why have pinholes appeared?

Check stock contamination, forming-fabric damage, headbox conditions and vacuum elements. Photograph the pattern and compare it with the fabric repeat and recent process changes before replacing a component.

Press dryness has dropped — what should I investigate?

Confirm the measurement and trend, then inspect felt condition, showers, suction, nip loading, roll surfaces and furnish changes. Record inlet and outlet solids under comparable conditions; a dryness change alone cannot quantify steam use.

Why does my dryer fabric seam keep failing?

Document where and how the seam fails. Check seam assembly, pin condition, tracking, tension, machine contact and operating temperature against the model instructions before choosing a different seam.

Is the problem in the fabric or the machine?

Compare the defect with the fabric’s repeat and its position on the machine, then check recent changes to stock, settings and hardware. Use inspection records and controlled changes; location or timing alone cannot prove the cause.

What causes edge cracks in forming fabric?

Check edge contact, roll alignment, tension profile, guiding and chemical exposure. Photograph both edges and examine the fracture pattern; the cause should be confirmed before changing yarn or weave.

When should I contact PAPTEX?

Contact us when a failure is recurring, the cause remains unclear, or a new fabric specification is being considered. Send the model, machine position, operating data and photos through the contact form so the team can assess the case.
