How important is press-felt conditioning?
Conditioning is essential because deposits, fines and chemical precipitation can change permeability and water handling. The correct shower pressure, vacuum and cleaning method are position-specific; use the felt supplier's data sheet and the machine's approved operating limits.
Monitor these trends:
- shower pressure profile, nozzle condition and oscillation;
- uhle-box vacuum, slot and seal condition;
- water quality, temperature and chemical compatibility;
- felt permeability, caliper, moisture and cross-machine profile;
- cleaning response, sheet quality and press dryness;
- operating days, tons produced and the documented removal reason.
If performance declines, separate contamination from compaction, mechanical damage, vacuum problems and furnish changes before changing chemistry or replacing the felt. Evaluate conditioning improvements from comparable trend data, not a universal life-extension percentage.
