Customer Background

One of China's leading tissue producers operates an advanced 5.6 m tissue machine designed for speeds up to 2,000 m/min. The line produces premium lightweight tissue in the 12.5–16 g/m² range and is among the widest tissue machines in Asia.

The Challenge

Above 1,800 m/min, the existing forming fabric developed progressive wire marks and accelerated surface wear. With a forming window of about 300 milliseconds, uneven drainage became visible in the sheet immediately. The mill needed a fabric that could withstand extreme dynamic load without sacrificing sheet quality.

The Solution

PAPTEX supplied a 3CSSB triple-layer SSB forming fabric with FSI 159 on the paper side and a 10-shed satin surface. The drainage curve was redesigned with staged foil angles of 0.5°, 1.0°, 1.5° and 2.0° to distribute drainage through the forming zone. Finer cross-machine yarns reduced wire-mark risk.

Root Cause Analysis

The existing fabric released water too aggressively in the first 10–15% of the forming zone. Early sheet closure and local drainage imbalance transferred the fabric pattern to the sheet surface.

Implementation Timeline

On-site audit

Week 1

Audit the machine, analyze the fabric and assess the drainage curve.

Fabric design

Weeks 2–3

Customize the SSB structure, FSI and cross-yarn diameter.

Installation and commissioning

Weeks 4–5

Install the fabric and recalibrate forming-section settings.

Stable operation

Week 6

Monitor continuously, fine-tune settings and verify final performance.

Results — Verified KPIs

Wire marks were eliminated at operating speeds up to 2,000 m/min. Fabric life increased from 55 to 78 days, a 42% improvement. The forming index improved by 8 points and machine uptime increased by 3.2%. The mill standardized PAPTEX SSB forming fabrics across its tissue machines.

Fabric Life Extension+42%
Forming Index Improvement+8 pts

Return on Investment

Fabric life increased by 42% and uptime by 3.2%; the investment was recovered within two operating cycles.
