A tension reading needs context
A tension gauge can provide a measurement, but a number on its own is not an adjustment instruction. The useful question is whether the reading was taken in a repeatable way and whether it matches the installed fabric data sheet and the paper mill's established procedure.
Do not transfer a published setting from another fabric, machine width, paper grade or operating condition. Forming fabrics, press felts and dryer fabrics have different constructions and run in different machine environments.
Field record checklist before adjustment
Record these items before changing a tension setting:
- Installed fabric identity: the fabric ID, construction, position, installed date and the applicable data sheet.
- Reason for the check: the observed symptom, its location and when it first appeared.
- Measurement method: the instrument, measurement point, direction, unit and whether the same method can be repeated later.
- Machine condition: paper grade, operating state, relevant speed or load changes, moisture or drainage observations, and recent cleaning or maintenance work.
- Distribution across the width: whether readings and fabric behaviour are comparable at the selected positions across the width.
- Running condition: tracking, edge condition, contact path, visible marks and any abrupt change from the previous observation.
The aim is not to collect a longer form. It is to create a like-for-like record that makes a later comparison meaningful.
Check the reference before changing anything
Use the installed fabric data sheet and the mill's operating procedure as the adjustment reference. If either is unavailable, record that gap rather than substituting a generic value. A supplier review can only be useful when the fabric identification, machine position and measurement context are clear.
Avoid changing several variables at once. If a tension adjustment, guide adjustment and cleaning change are all made together, the later result cannot reliably show which change mattered.
Different sections require different context
Forming section
For a forming fabric, relate the observation to drainage behaviour, sheet formation, tracking and any change around the forming board, foils or suction elements. Do not assume that a reading from one forming position applies to another design or paper grade.
Press section
For a press felt, capture the felt position, dewatering symptoms, nip-related observations and any conditioning or cleaning change. Tension is only one part of a press-felt review.
Dryer section
For a dryer fabric, note the fabric construction, seam or spiral condition where relevant, dryer position, tracking and the recent operating context. The correct reference is the installed fabric specification, not a generic dryer-section figure.
Prepare a supplier-ready review package
When asking for technical input, send the completed field record together with clear photos of the relevant area and the installed fabric data sheet. State what has already changed and what outcome you are trying to assess. This lets the discussion begin with the actual machine context rather than an isolated reading.
Practical takeaway
Measure consistently, record the machine context, compare like with like and use the installed specification before making an adjustment. That is a safer basis for a forming-fabric, press-felt or dryer-fabric tension review than relying on one number alone.
When a tension check is part of a forming-fabric review
When a tension reading is collected with fabric movement, edge contact or an uneven edge condition, keep it in the same evidence record as the guiding observation. This helps distinguish a recorded condition from an assumed cause.
