
A Tension Reading Needs Context
A tension gauge can provide a useful reading, but a number on its own is not a tension decision. The reading depends on the measurement method, fabric position, machine path, product construction, width and operating state. It may not show whether loading is balanced across the fabric width.
Before changing a setting, record how the reading was taken and what the fabric is doing on the machine. That makes it possible to compare a later check with the same baseline instead of relying on memory.
1. Confirm the Correct Reference Before Measuring
Use the installed fabric data sheet and the paper mill's established procedure as the reference for an adjustment. Do not apply a published value from a different paper machine, fabric width or construction.
Record the fabric identification, machine section, position, paper grade, machine condition and the reason for the check. For example, a tracking symptom, seam observation or recent installation creates a different review context from routine monitoring.
2. Record the Measurement Method, Not Only the Result
The measurement method should travel with every reading. Note the tool type, the measurement point, the machine state, the direction of travel and whether the value was taken during a stable run, shutdown or installation process.

If the paper mill uses a calibrated gauge, follow its calibration and handling practice. The objective of this article is record quality, not to replace that procedure.
3. Check Distribution Across the Fabric Width
An overall reading does not prove equal loading across the width. When the machine procedure permits, review the tensioning arrangement, roll condition, fabric edges and guiding behavior for signs that one side is seeing a different loading history.
Uneven edge wear, repeated movement toward one side or a response that changes with guide position should be documented with photos and video. Those observations may point to a guide, alignment, contact or installation issue that needs to be reviewed alongside tension.

4. Treat Fabric Types Differently
Forming fabrics, press felts and dryer fabrics have different functions and paths. A tension review should therefore start with the section-specific supplier documentation and operating procedure.
- Forming fabric: record the guide response, roll path, edge condition and drainage-area observations.
- Press felt: record the press position, felt condition, seam or edge observations and relevant nip-side maintenance history.
- Dryer fabric: record the dryer group, position, seam type, guide behavior and the fabric path around cylinders and rolls.

5. Avoid Solving Several Variables at Once
If a correction is approved, change one variable at a time and observe the result under comparable operating conditions. Changing tension, guide settings, speed and cleaning practice together can make a later diagnosis impossible.

6. Send a Supplier-Ready Tension Review Package
For a useful technical discussion, prepare the current fabric data sheet or label, machine section and position, dimensions, measurement method, readings, guide observations, photos of both edges, recent maintenance and operating changes. Include the question you want answered: whether to confirm the current setting, investigate the path, or evaluate a replacement.
