A trial order needs a shared definition of success
A first order is not only a purchase transaction. It is the point where a mill and a PMC supplier establish how technical information, installation evidence and operating observations will be reviewed. A useful trial plan makes open questions visible before delivery rather than after a fabric has been installed.
This article does not promise a particular result from a new clothing design. It describes a practical way to prepare a fair, traceable evaluation.
Define the exact machine position
Start with one identified machine position, not a general request for a product family. Record the section, position, current clothing, paper grade, machine width, normal speed, dimensions, seam requirement and the reason a change is being considered.
For a replacement project, retain the used-clothing photos and the recent operating observations. They give the supplier a context that cannot be captured by a product name alone.
Separate the operating objective from the expected result
Write what the site wants to investigate: for example, a recurring installation concern, a change in cleanliness, a need to review sheet support, or a desire to compare a proposed construction against the current record. Avoid converting a commercial claim into an assumed operating outcome.
The objective should tell both parties what evidence will be reviewed, while the actual result remains subject to machine conditions and the documented start-up record.
Give the supplier the input package before production
The supplier should receive a consistent package:

Review the specification before the order is released
Confirm the item description, construction terms, material statement, dimensions, direction, seam details, package identification and commercial scope. If a stated property is important to the review, ask for the test method and sample condition as well as the value.

Agree on the installation record
Before delivery, identify who will confirm the product label, machine direction, seam or joining components, dimensions, route and initial installation condition. The record should include photos where site policy allows and should distinguish observations from conclusions.

Use a simple evaluation timeline
Agree in advance when the mill will share initial observations and which operating data is available. The purpose is to avoid relying only on an informal first impression after start-up. If a condition changes, record what changed in the machine or process before attributing it to the clothing.
The review can include three practical checkpoints: receipt and installation, an initial stable-running observation, and a later operating review agreed by the site team. The timing depends on the machine and should not be treated as a universal schedule.
Decide what happens when a question remains open
At each checkpoint, classify an item as confirmed, needs supplier clarification, needs site confirmation or requires a joint technical review. This prevents a missing drawing, seam question or measurement condition from becoming an untraceable disagreement.
