Dryer Section Energy Diagnosis & Energy-Saving Solutions

Diagnose steam use as a system

High dryer-section steam use cannot be assigned to the dryer fabric from one reading. Grade mix, inlet moisture, production rate, steam pressure, condensate removal, hood balance, pocket ventilation, cylinder condition and fabric cleanliness all affect the result.

Establish a baseline before changing a fabric or operating setting.

1. Normalize the data

Record steam use per ton together with grade, basis weight, speed, inlet and outlet moisture and production rate. Compare equivalent operating periods. A total steam reading without these conditions cannot show whether performance improved.

2. Check the dryer fabric by position

Review permeability, structure, seam, tension, contamination and contact condition for each dryer group. PAPTEX dryer specifications show that different positions can require different permeability windows; there is no single CFM target for the whole machine.

3. Inspect the surrounding systems

Area Evidence to collect
Pocket ventilation pressure, temperature, humidity, blocked or misaligned ducts
Steam and condensate pressure stability, trap operation, condensate backup, blow-through
Cylinders and doctors surface condition, deposits, drainage and doctor performance
Vacuum and sheet handling leaks, setpoints, sheet stability and moisture profile
Fabric condition permeability trend, contamination, seam and edge condition

4. Test one change at a time

Define the expected mechanism, trial period and success metrics before changing a fabric or setting. Keep other variables stable where possible, and record deviations. Confirm any saving from measured steam per ton and product quality—not from a generic percentage.

Engineering review information

Provide the dryer arrangement, grade and basis-weight range, width, speed, inlet/outlet moisture, steam and condensate data, hood/pocket readings, current fabric specification, permeability trend, life and failure photos.

Request a dryer-section review or read the position-specific dryer fabric selection guide.
