Customer Background

This leading Chinese fine-paper line uses a 5.28 m Valmet Fourdrinier machine with a D-Former to produce premium writing and printing grades at speeds up to 1,350 m/min.

The Challenge

Two fabric-related issues caused downtime: uneven formation in the wire section and early dryer-fabric stretch that led to tracking problems. Fabrics from separate suppliers were not optimized as one system across the wet and dry ends.

The Solution

PAPTEX implemented a coordinated PMC package: a 3CSSB forming fabric paired with a BGW flat-yarn dryer fabric, calibrated to the moisture profile at the forming-section exit. One supplier optimized the transition from wet end to dryer section as a complete system.

Root Cause Analysis

The forming and dryer fabrics had been selected independently, creating a moisture-profile mismatch at the wet-end/dryer-section interface.

Implementation Timeline

Full-line audit

Weeks 1–2

Audit the wet end and dryer section and assess the moisture profile.

Solution design

Weeks 3–4

Design the forming and drying package together and calibrate FSI and permeability.

Installation and commissioning

Weeks 5–7

Install forming and dryer fabrics in sequence and adjust moisture-control settings.

Acceptance

Week 8

Verify the cross-direction moisture profile and confirm efficiency.

Results — Verified KPIs

Cross-direction moisture variation fell by 35%. Dryer-fabric tracking issues were eliminated and machine efficiency improved by 4.7%. The mill consolidated its PMC supply with one provider.

Return on Investment

Machine efficiency improved by 4.7%; the mill consolidated to one supplier and recovered the investment within three months.
